Planning for College
High School Preparation
Extracurricular Activities
When colleges and universities consider your admission, they look at your interpersonal
and leadership skills in addition to your school work. One of the best ways to increase
your chances of being admitted is participating in extracurricular activities.
Colleges and universities often look for activities that complement your education.
Working or volunteering in your school, the community, or religious organizations
are some of the ways to explore your interests and talents. Showing dedicated involvement
with a few activites is better than being involved with a lot of things on a surface
level.
Here are some ideas and tips for extracurricular activities:
After-School Clubs
Check out the clubs your school has to offer, such as Amnesty International, National
Honor Society, Ski Club, Distributive Education (DECA) or many others.
Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)
While this program is usually offered in college, this program will create an opportunity
for scholarships based on merit.

By giving your time to a valuable organization, like the American Red Cross, United
Way, or your religious organization, you demonstrate to colleges that you care about
your community.
Athletics
Playing sports in high school is another activity that can show schools that you
have leadership skills and dedication. If you plan to participate in athletics at
the collegiate level, you should be aware of eligibility, scholarships, and recruiting
with your specific colleges.
